I've been shooting on my Canon EOS 2000D since 2020. A Christmas present which changed a lot for me. My first ever camera bar a little 'digi cam' I had when I was little. It's the camera I took on my first big hikes, big life moments and countless walks through the landscape. A way of capturing memories of the world around me. In this post I will write a little bit about my overall thoughts and opinions on this camera and how it has been for me.

The camera build
The 2000D feels to me like it was made for adventure, although it is not the lightest on the market, it is light enough that you can carry it round your neck and in your hands on a hike without tiring out your arms. That said, it is solid enough that I never worry about it on the trails or on an outdoor shoot. However, it is not weather sealed so if its raining you will need to be careful and get it its own little rain cover - loads on amazon! The grip is comfortable, the buttons are almost intuitive once you know the brand it's easy enough to navigate as it is an entry level camera.
Image quality
This little camera produces sharp, clean images that I love. The sensor captures textures, colours, and details beautifully, from grassy hills to sandy pools of water on the shoreline. Shooting in RAW gives it the flexibility to tweak light and colour in Lightroom while keeping the shot looking natural. Landscapes, surf, or even up close , all the shots are crisp and vibrant. In low light levels, the noise does become more noticeable, but if you sort out your settings and grab a tripod you can work around it.

Battery life
The battery life will last a whole shoot, with a spare making longer hikes or surf shoot sessions worry-free.

Commercial/editorial work
Even in more professional contexts, the 2000D holds its own. Its simplicity makes it easy to focus on framing, lighting and story, rather than getting distracted by complex menus or settings. For outdoor brand shoots or editorial-style projects, it delivers clean authentic images. Combined with thoughtful edits, it produces work that's read for portfolios or client use without needing to be over processed.

Who is it for
The Canon 2000D is perfect for beginners, first time DSLR owners, or anyone who wants a reliable, portable camera for photography. It encourages you to focus on composition, light and timing rather than relying on features or fancy settings. However, if you want a super fast, weather proof camera with 4K video, this camera may not be for you. But for landscapes, surf, hiking, and everyday photography, this camera is more than capable.

Overall thoughts and opinions
The 2000D is lightweight, reliable, and surprisingly versatile. It has taught me to observe, anticipate and capture moments with intention. The critiques are minor - weather proof, some noise in low light etc... but none of them take away from how much I enjoy using it. As my first DSLR camera, it's been a trusted companion for my photography practice, outdoor adventures, and creative exploration. Not to mention carrying me through my whole undergraduate degree and now through my masters. So I can only recommend this camera as it has done me well and is still going strong.
